2017 Chinese New Year Origami Rooster Extravaganza!

2016 was the year of the monkey and last year I kind of struggled to find origami monkeys for a Chinese New Year themed post. This year however is a completely different story.

I'd been amassing quite a collection of origami roosters for a while now. I save photos I see and sort them into categories for future posts. The birds category had a huge number of roosters.

I try to mix things up when I make posts to get a variety of different birds for example in a post about birds. However there were too many roosters and after I planned out several bird-themed posts there were tons left over.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this year is the year of the rooster so it looks like everything will work out wonderfully. So to celebrate Chinese New Year 2017 here's our "Rooster Extravaganza" featuring over 50 origami roosters!

We'll start things off with this incredible game cock designed by Kei Watanabe. Check out all those individually folded feathers!

Next we have this cute little rooster designed by Tetsuya Gotani. You'll see that a lot of these designs have an excellent colour change and use white and red paper. The baby chick here is a nice touch.

23 Beary Awesome Origami Animals that You Otter See

Animals are still probably the most popular thing to fold with paper. This post we'll be looking at a wide variety of different origami animals. There isn't really a theme here just that they're all animals and they look great.

First up is this absolutely adorable red panda from one of the best animal designers, Quentin Trollip.

Frog

Toadly Awesome, Un-Frog-Gettable and Quite Ribbitting Origami Frogs

I've been toad that I wasn't using enough puns on this post titles so here's a whole bunch.

This post is all about origami frogs and possibly some toads as well.

I just learned that Flickr has an option to embed Flickr photos on websites. In previous posts I've been saving the images, resizing them, compressing them and uploading them to this website. Doing it that way ends up taking a really long time every time I make one of these posts.

This time I'm trying the Flickr embed method. Hopefully it should take a lot less time to put together one of these posts.

Let's get started with Sebastien Limet's famous Climb Peaks model.

This model is Satoshi Kamiya's tree frog but depending on what kind of paper you use you can easily change it into something like this poison dart frog.

That's it for this post. I can definitely confirm that using the Flickr embed code takes way less time than saving each image individually. Some of these images seem to have the embed code disabled but even still, the majority of them work and that's going to save me a huge amount of time which is awesome.

If you try folding any of these frogs share a photo in the comments so we can take a look!

Cat

25 Purr-fect Origami Cats, Fur Real, I'm not Kitten...

We're setting the record for the most puns in a post title with this one!

Origami cats are a curious thing. I've come across a lot of really fantastic origami lion and tiger models. Even some panthers, leopards and other large cats.

House cats on the other hand are much harder to find. I don't really know why that is but my theory is that it must be much harder to make natural looking origami cats than it is making origami versions of other animals.

That being said there are some really great cat and kitten models out there. It just took a while to collect enough for a post. You'll also see some lions, tigers and other giant cats thrown in here too.

We'll start off this post with probably the most famous house cat model designed by Katsuta Kyohei.

23 Wonderful Origami Woodland Animals

Animals are definitely the most popular things to fold out of paper and over the years I've seen a huge amount of great origami animals.

I have a huge list of paper animals to feature so it's time to start making some animal themed posts.

This time we're featuring woodland animals. These are the types of animals that you'd expect to see in a forest setting.

We'll start out with this absolutely beautiful deer. I love how it's looking right at the camera and how expressive it looks.

24 Beautiful Migratory Origami Birds for the #OrigamiMigration

The World Wildlife Fund in Spain is currently running an origami challenge in order to help protect migratory birds in Spain.

Doñana National Park in Spain is one of the most important sites for migratory birds in all of Europe. Every year six million birds visit this park and they rely on its wetland to survive on their yearly journey across of Europe.

The Spanish government currently has river dredging plans that threaten Doñana National Park and its wetlands. The WWF has until December 1, 2016 to convince the Spanish government to cancel their plans.

Just like the Elephant Origami Challenge the WWF is asking as many people as possible to fold origami birds and share a photo on social media with the hashtag #OrigamiMigration.

They're also putting together a large piece of artwork in the streets of Madrid using the origami birds that people mail in. If you'd like your bird to be part of this artwork you can mail it to:

Freepost RTGL-XRZU-HHEZ
WWF-UK
The Living Planet Centre
Brewery Road
WOKING

You can learn more about the origami migration here:

I'm pretty certain most of these are technically migratory birds although it's possible one or two non-migratory birds might have also slipped into this post as well.
