João Charrua is an origami artist based in Portugal, known for folding deeply expressive, portrait-like sculptures from a single square of paper. He often sculpts delicate facial features (noses, brows, lips) with surprising realism, capturing a glimpse of inner life in paper form.
He began exploring origami about 13 years ago as a way to create art with his daughter, then immersed himself in the folding community and challenged himself to push paper’s limits.
His process includes making three-dimensional “sketches” and iterations so that the final fold is deliberate, yet full of subtle personality.
In João’s words, he creates “things that don’t exist because I wished they were real.”
