Luisa Canovi

Luisa Canovi is an Italian origami artist, paper designer, author, and teacher with more than 40 years of experience working with paper.

She studied scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and later graduated from the DAMS program at the University of Bologna. She began working with origami in 1981, creating paper objects, toys, decorations, and theatrical sets.

From 1985 to 1991, Luisa was president of the Centro Diffusione Origami, helping to promote origami across Italy. Since 1988, she has taken part in many exhibitions and published several origami books with publishers including Sansoni, Demetra, Cartiere Miliani Fabriano, Fabbri, and Mondadori.

In 1996, she founded Paper Factory in Milan, a cultural association dedicated to paper arts, where she organized courses, exhibitions, and events. She later opened Studio Origami Do in 2009, combining her cultural work with her career as a paper designer.

Luisa has been teaching origami, artist’s books, and suminagashi since 2012. In 2016, she organized Italy’s first conference dedicated to the profession of origami designer.

In 2020, she opened the Origami Do Temporary Gallery, a space where visitors could discover and purchase origami sculptures and other paper creations. Her latest book, Suminagashi, l’arte dell’inchiostro fluttuante, was published by Luni Editrice in 2025.
