How to Fold an Origami Cube
Let’s learn how to fold a Sonobe cube, one of the most popular modular origami models. It’s made from six identical units that fit together without any glue or tape.
You’ll start by folding six simple Sonobe units, then assemble them into a sturdy paper cube. The process is easier than it looks, and seeing the cube take shape is one of the most satisfying parts of the project.
This is a great model if you’re ready to try modular origami for the first time. It takes about 15 minutes to fold and assemble, and it’s a fun way to play with different paper colors. Try using two, three, or even six different colors to create your own unique pattern.

You’ll need 6 square sheets of paper, all the same size. You can play around with different color combinations. Here, we’ll be using three different colors, with 2 sheets of each color.

I hope you enjoyed folding this Sonobe cube. Once you’ve made your first one, you’ll see why this model has been a favorite for so many years.
Try making another cube with different color or pattern combinations. Even a small change in the paper colors can give the finished cube a completely different look.
Did you know? The cube is made from six identical Sonobe modules, designed by Japanese origami artist Mitsunobu Sonobe in the late 1960s. Today, they’re used to create many modular origami models, making this cube a great introduction to the Sonobe family.
If you fold one, I’d love to see it. Feel free to share a photo in the comments.

you should make tutorials for the stellar isocehedron and octahedron
Yes, we should 🙂 It’s been on my mind for a while now, and your message was a good reminder. I’ll add it to our list.
how long does it take for these projects to get onto the website?
Quite a while, as we plan our content well in advance. We already have our schedule filled through August, so if we include it, it’ll likely be after that.
That said, I think this one has a pretty good chance of making it to Patreon in September, then to the website in October.
wow, thank you for the clarification! I really like modular origami!
We’re planning to share more modular origami and kusudama in the coming months. Feel free to take a look at our Patreon to see what we’re working on 🙂
bruh
You’re very close! Those sides should be on the inside of the cube. Reverse the folds along the edges, then reassemble it. You should then see the pockets where the flaps slide in. I’ll be posting an updated version of this tutorial soon with more detailed instructions 😉
This is what a GOOD cube looks like!
Love the colors! Thanks for sharing 🙂
This is really fun and easy I am also trying to find simple origami and this is one of the easiest yet! (TheNo.1 easiest is the origami me paper boat and No.2 easiest is the origami me paper bookmark!) Love it! 😍
You’ll fold more difficult ones in no time 🙂 You can filter tutorials by difficulty level in our Origami Index.
