How to Fold an Easy Origami Fan
The sensu, or folding fan, has a really interesting history! It originated during Japan’s Heian period and has evolved from a symbol of aristocratic status to a versatile tool in many aspects of Japanese life. It’s used in traditional dances, theatrical performances, ceremonies, and artwork. Oh, and it’s great for staying cool, too!
In this tutorial, we’re going to make a traditional origami fan. It’s quite an easy model to fold, and it will give you lots of practice with precise folding.
You can use either a rectangular or square piece of paper. We used small paper sheets here, but of course, a bigger sheet will make a bigger fan. Helping you stay cool with less effort.

On the right side, fold each segment created in the previous step in half, and then unfold. Follow the diagram to see where to fold.
Step 4
Repeat on the left side.
Step 5
Turn the paper over and fold each segment in half.
Step 6
Collapse the model and open the left flap.
Step 7
With the left flap open, fold the model in half from bottom to top, keeping the left flap. We’ll use it to attach both sides together.
Step 8
Fold both corners to the center line, simultaneously folding the two layers.
Step 9
Fold the top corner down once more. The angle is not important.
This fold is to secure the previous fold made in step 8.
Step 10
Close the left flap towards the center of the fan to lock both sides together. Use the existing crease.
Step 11
Open the fan and rotate the model towards you.
