How to Fold an Origami Pigeon: Step-by-Step Instructions

This traditional origami pigeon was first published in Japan back in 1931. It’s a very easy model, quick to fold, and perfect for complete beginners.

The design is geometric and stylized, with a flat body, a triangular tail, and sharply folded wings that give the impression of a bird in mid-flight.

Step 1

Start with the white side of the paper facing up. Fold along the vertical diagonal, then unfold.

Step 2

Fold along the horizontal diagonal, from top to bottom.

Step 3

Fold the bottom corner of the two layers up along the dashed line (about 1/3 down from the top).

Step 4

Fold the top corner of the top layer down along the dashed line (about 1/3 up from the bottom).

Step 5

Fold the model in half from right to left.

Step 6

Rotate the model 90° counterclockwise.

Step 7

Fold the bottom corner of the top flap up along the dashed line. There aren’t exact references here, but try to make the visible white area look as square as possible.

Step 8

Turn the model over.

Step 9

Fold the bottom corner up to meet the top corner.

Step 10

Fold the left corner downward. Crease well, then unfold. There’s no exact reference point for this fold. It’ll shape the pigeon’s beak, so adjust it until it looks right.

Step 11

Make an inside reverse fold along the creases you just made.

The Completed Origami Pigeon

You can fold a whole flock in different colors, or add it to a greeting card, mobile, or wall display. Simple folds, satisfying result.
