Tips for Easy Origami

Start easy and move up

If you’re just starting your origami journey, begin with models labeled Very Easy and Easy. Once those start to feel comfortable, move up to the next difficulty level. It’s a simple way to build confidence without getting frustrated.

You can also check out our beginner guide or follow our free video course to learn the basics.

Use two-tone paper when learning

Paper with a different color on each side makes diagrams much easier to follow. You can quickly see which side should be facing up and understand where each fold is going.

Japanese origami paper, or kami, is my go-to for beginners and a great choice if you want to get more seriously into origami. See our paper guide.

Rotate the paper when it helps

You don’t need to keep the paper facing exactly the same direction as the diagram. Feel free to rotate the model so the fold is easier and more natural for your hands.

Questions

Easy Origami FAQ

What Is the Easiest Origami to Start With?

The easiest models are those that use only simple folds without tricky reverse or squash folds. Great starting points include the traditional origami swan, cicada, and paper boat. They’re quick to fold, easy to remember, and a perfect introduction to origami.

What Paper Should I Use for Easy Origami?

The best choice for beginners is kami, lightweight, crisp, and inexpensive paper made specifically for origami. It holds creases well and is perfect for traditional and simple models. You can also use printer paper or construction paper cut into a square, but since they’re thicker and more prone to tearing, they’re only suitable for the easiest folds.

How Long Does an Easy Origami Model Take?

The easiest origami projects can be folded in 5 to 15 minutes. Very simple models may take under 5 minutes, while slightly more detailed ones might take a little longer.

Can Children Fold Easy Origami?

Yes! Many of our Level 1 and Level 2 tutorials are ideal for children around 5 years and up. These models use clear folds and simple shapes, making them easy to follow. Folding together is a fun, screen-free family activity and an excellent way to introduce children to concepts of geometry and mathematics through hands-on learning. See Origami for Kids.

Do I Need Special Tools for Simple Origami?

No tools are required, just a sheet of square paper. Some folders like to use a craft mat or a bone folder to sharpen creases, but they’re optional. Once you’re comfortable with easy origami, try our intermediate origami tutorials. These projects add more detail and technique, helping you grow your folding skills.
